Total -The number of 1998 South Carolina seniors taking the SAT I (22,973) increased from the previous year compared with national increase of 4.1%
Mean Score -South Carolina's 1998 mean Verbal score of 478 was one point lower than the previous year's 479 while the National mean
SAT Verbal score of 505 remained constant. South Carolina's 1998 mean Math score of 473 was one point lower than the

previous year's 474 while the National mean Math score of 512 was one point higher than the previous year's mean of 511.

Gender -Continuing the trend of the past few years, the 1998 female SAT test takers in South Carolina outnumbered the males 56.5% to
43.5% approximating the 54.3% females and 45.7% males in the National SAT taking population.

Ethnic -The 1998 SAT participation by ethnic group in South Carolina consists of 26.3% African-Americans, 0.7% American Indians, 1.9%

Asians, 1.0%, Hispanics, and 61.2% Whites, 1.1% Others, and 7.8% No Response. The National participation rate consists of 9.8%

African-Americans, 0.9% American Indians, 8.0% Asians, 7.7% Hispanics, 60.1% Whites, 3.0% Others, and 10.5% No Response.
