Today CHE mourns the passing of Dr. Robert Layton McCurdy, a distinguished physician, educator, and public servant who chaired the Commission from 2005 - 2008.

A native of South Carolina’s Pee Dee region, Dr. McCurdy dedicated his life to advancing medicine, higher education, and the well-being of communities across our state and nation. During his tenure with CHE, he worked to strengthen strategic planning and collaboration across South Carolina’s colleges and universities.

Dr. McCurdy’s legacy is defined not only by his extraordinary professional accomplishments, but by his quiet leadership, integrity, and deep respect for every individual. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who were influenced by his life of service.
